The variety of geophysical obligations leads to a broad spectrum of job opportunities.

A large part of geophysicists work for companies and institutions in the exploration industry. This includes oil-, gas-, water- and mineral-research. Most of these activities are performed outside of Europe.

Two likewise interesting and important parts are engineering and environmental geophysics. Rather small companies offer a wide range of services concerning the underground, for example stability inquiries at buildings, dams and banks, dumpsite-monitoring and certificates for mining.

Besides in specific geophysical jobs, geophysicists are employed also in related fields. These are measurement techniques, computer and material science, environmental protection and the air/space industry.

Geophysicists are expected to solve complex problems autonomous in short time, to get along with organization and logistical problems in the inland and abroad even under hindered circumstances, to develop creativity and to show empathy regarding alien business partners.
